2026 Community Utility Active

Torinks

Toronto rink schedule finder. Pulls the schedules for all 104 city rinks and lets you filter by activity, date, and time, with a map view, list view, and weekly calendar. Built it because finding public skate times shouldn't be hard.

The problem

Toronto runs 104 indoor and outdoor rinks, and every one of them has its own drop-in schedule on its own page of the City’s website. If you want to know where you can take your kids for a public skate on Saturday afternoon, you open a dozen tabs and compare them by hand.

What it does

Torinks puts every city rink in one place. It reads the City of Toronto’s public rink and drop-in schedule data and shows it three ways: a list, a map, and a seven-day calendar. You can filter by activity (leisure skate, shinny, figure skating), by day, and by time of day, sort by distance from where you are, and see whether a rink is open, closed, or has a notice posted. Filters live in the URL, so a search can be shared or bookmarked.

How it’s built

A Next.js app. Server routes fetch the City’s public data feeds and cache them, so the site stays fast and the City’s servers see one refresh every few minutes, not one request per visitor. Leaflet draws the map. It runs in Docker next to my other projects and deploys on every push.

It’s a small side project, and the kind of thing I like building: a specific annoyance that becomes easy to fix once someone puts the data in one place.
